Music Fans’ Voice survey highlights key issues for UK live music fans

24 April 2025

A detailed online survey called ‘Music Fans’ Voice’ has brought awareness to the UK live music sector, from the unique perspective of fans themselves.

Following a similar initiative in football, the UK Parliament’s Culture and Sport Select Committee called for a fan-led review of live and electronic music. Building on the committee’s recommendation, the CGA and NIQ collaborated on the design and implementation of The Music Fans’ Voice.

Taking place between 3rd February and 4th March this year, the survey collates the opinions of over 8,000 participants – providing insight into both the strengths and shortcomings of the live music events sector.

The data demonstrates a steadfast enthusiasm for live music, with 99% of respondents agreeing that these events are an important part of UK culture. It’s clear that attendees wish to support the grassroots music industry – with 93% of those surveyed strongly agreeing that £1 per ticket from every stadium or arena show should go into a fund that directly supports this sector.

However, the rising cost of living is inhibiting people’s ability to attend events – directly causing a decline in attendance. In fact, 91% of those surveyed stated that lower ticket prices would encourage more frequent attendance. Nevertheless, 71% of giggoers cited support for their local music scene and artists as a key reason for visiting venues.

A widely shared criticism of ticketing systems surfaced in the findings, specifically regarding ticket resales. 91% of participants are calling for legislation to make the resale of tickets for profit completely illegal. Dynamic pricing faced a similarly scathing response, with the same percentage calling for it to be banned.
