Creative Rights in AI Coalition Propels Copyright Protection Against AI
Every creative fears for the future of their livelihood in the face of the rise of Artificial Intelligence. Will there still be a need for human creators once AI reaches a certain capacity? Companies are feeding AI systems with organic media for platforms to replicate and, ultimately, surpass the quality of humanity’s creativity. These corporations act without permission, leaving creatives with no compensation for their work used in AI training models.
However, the UK’s creative industries recognise this threat. Joining forces in the Creative Rights in AI Coalition, dozens of organisations, including PRS, BPI, UK Music, and others, have called on the UK Government to intervene. In December, the coalition published key copyright protection principles to provide a framework for policy. These principles include:
• Transparency between AI developers and creators about how media is used in AI training models.
• Increased control for rights holders over the use of their work in training models.
• Fair compensation for rights holders when their work is used.
In response, the government appears determined to introduce beneficial legislation to protect human copyright. A public consultation is open until 25 February to understand the needs of creatives and determine the best way forward.
You can contribute to the public consultation here, and help shape how your creative endeavours are protected from AI.
