Keir Starmer appoints Lisa Nandy as DCMS secretary

11 July 2024

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has appointed the cabinet secretary and junior minister in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

Lisa Nandy, the MP for Wigan, is now the secretary of state for culture, media and sport. She succeeds Thangam Debbonaire, who lost her Bristol seat in last week’s general election.

Chris Bryant, the MP for Rhondda and Ogmore, has been named the minister of state in DCMS and also appointed minister in the Department for Science, Technology and Innovation.

Nandy, 44, has served in parliament since 2010 and held various frontbench roles, including shadow secretary of state for energy and climate change, foreign and commonwealth affairs, and levelling up, housing and communities.

Nandy ran in Labour’s 2020 leadership election, finishing in third place. She studied politics at Newcastle University and public policy at Birkbeck, University of London, and worked at the homelessness charity Centrepoint and the Children’s Society.
