BRIT Award Winner Myles Smith rallies support for grassroots venues in acceptance speech
Winner of the Rising Star 2025 award Myles Smith urged for greater protection of grassroots venues in his acceptance speech this weekend.
Smith criticised the government for treating emerging artists as an ‘afterthought’ by cutting funding, despite the music industry being one of the UK’s greatest exports. He emphasised the impact of government schemes that provided instruments to his Luton state school, enabling him to become a “four-time Brit nominee.”
To major venues in the UK and worldwide, Myles directed the question “If artists selling out your arenas and your stadiums started in grassroots venues, what are you doing to keep them alive?”
The winner also addressed topical issues regarding career longevity, telling music executives to “stick with artists past their first viral hit”.
Recent developments indicate potential change within the current industry landscape, with creatives and leading industry organisations rallying together in movements such as Make It Fair. While Smith’s endorsement adds to the growing calls for action, lasting change will depend on continued pressure from across the industry and beyond. With wider support, the government has the opportunity to strengthen music education, protect grassroots venues and ensure the sustainability of music careers, safeguarding an industry that contributes billions to the UK economy.
